A Borden man was arrested by the Floyd County Sheriff’s Department Tuesday morning for physically assaulting his wife, deputies reported.

Kenneth J. Smith Jr., 50, of 6590 Chapel Hill Road, faces three charges following an early-morning altercation with his wife of eight years.

Smith’s wife contacted authorities at about 6:45 a.m. from their home, where she said the assault took place.

As deputies were responding to the home, Mrs. Smith was able to leave the residence and met the deputies a short time later at Chapel Hill Church in Greenville.

“Mrs. Smith was upset and crying and wearing her pajamas and was barefoot sitting in her vehicle,” a deputy reported.

A deputy had the woman sit inside a patrol car, where she said that Kenneth Smith had become very angry the night before about a loan that she had recently taken out to pay taxes and other bills.

She also told the deputies that her husband is an alcoholic and, “ ... drinks large amounts of beer every day,” according to the police report.

According to her statements, Kenneth Smith was still angry when they woke up the next morning, and told her to get out of the house.

She continued to tell the deputies that she had been verbally abused by Kenneth Smith in the past, but that morning was the first time he had physically abused her.

Mrs. Smith said she had picked up a phone several times to call police, but Kenneth Smith prevented her from doing so by knocking the phone from her hand.

As she attempted to leave the home, Mrs. Smith reported, Kenneth Smith pushed her out of the door and into the garage, which caused her to fall down two steps and into garbage bags of discarded beer and soda cans.

“Apparently, during the fall, Mrs. Smith struck the back of her head on an unknown object causing a mark and redness to appear at the base of her head/neck,” the deputy put into the report.

She also reported that during the course of the argument, Kenneth Smith choked her around the neck at least three times.

The deputy noted in the report that Mrs. Smith had redness around the base of her neck and under her chin.

The two deputies then left the church property to try to locate Kenneth Smith at the couple’s home.

As they arrived at the home the deputies found, “ ... what appeared to be a woman’s purse lying in the driveway with the contents scattered about,” according the report.

Mrs. Smith told the deputies that her husband may have gone to his parents’ home on his way to work. As the deputies drove to the address provided by Mrs. Smith, they saw Kenneth Smith driving toward couple’s home.

The deputies went back to the home and met with Kenneth Smith about 7:30 a.m.

He told them that he had become angry about his wife taking out a loan and that he had grabbed her and pulled her out of a bedroom of their home, but denied choking her.

Deputies then placed Kenneth Smith under arrest.

Smith was later charged in Floyd County Superior Court No. 1 with strangulation, a class D felony, domestic battery and interference with reporting a crime, both class A misdemeanors.

Kenneth Smith appeared in the court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing, at which point a bond of $2,500 court cash was set. The required $250 bond was posted, and Kenneth Smith was released from the Floyd County jail later in the day.

According to court officials, he has and initial hearing scheduled for today.
