Dennis ‘Dennie’ Marshall Smith, 55; former Jeffersonville resident

Dennis “Dennie” Marshall Smith, 55, of Madison, formerly of Jeffersonville, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital, Madison.

Born March 23, 1953 in Jeffersonville, he was a 1971 graduate of Jeffersonville High School and attended the First Christian Church, Jeffersonville. He received an associate degree in bio-medical engineering from United Electronics Institute and was last employed with Goodwill Industries as a manager in New Albany. He had worked as a supervisor with Norton Health Care, Louisville, from 2002 to 2004. From 1991-2002 he worked as the operations group manager for Biggs Foods in Clarksville and his favorite career and job was with Pinkerton Investigations in Louisville as a group manager from 1981-1990. While with Pinkerton he received seven letters of commendation and one letter of commendation from the president of his work. He enjoyed animals, especially his cat. He also loved photography, gardening and building model planes and ships. He was a member of the American Society of Industrial Security, Kentucky Association of Private Investigators and had served as secretary. He was also a member of Ohio Valley Association of Lawmen, International Association of Narcotics Investigator, Junior Achievement, Clark County Humane Society and Floyd County Humane Society. He was a certified O.S.H.A. standup forklift instructor, state of Indiana certified “Serve Safe” Food Safety instructor, Jefferson County Kentucky Special Deputy, Jefferson County Kentucky Special Bailiff, certified firearms ranger/ master instructor and certified Biological and Hazardous Spill Disposal Technician. He had always wanted to be an organ and tissue donor and in death he is able to be granted the wish to help other individuals by the gift of being a tissue donor.

Survivors include a sister, Susan Stillwell-Gullion and her husband, Randy, Madison; two brothers Steven L. Smith and his wife, Janice, Portsmouth, Va., and Kevin Smith and his life partner, Vaughn Harrison, Norfolk Va.; nieces and nephews, Sarah and Jesse Stillwell, Amy Fitzgerald and Christopher and Eric Smith; four great-nieces; and a great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Edward and Elizabeth Linck Pardue Smith.

He requested to be cremated and there will be no service.

He desired that people plant a tree or plant in his memory and for those who wish to contribute in his memory, donate to the Hospice of King’s Daughters’ Hospital, Jefferson County Animal Shelter or Floyd and Clark County Humane Society.

Morgan and Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive, Madison, is in charge of arrangements. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
