Ethel Mae Ellis, 73; of Jeffersonville
Funeral services for Ethel Mae Ellis, 73, of Jeffersonville, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 17, at Wesley United Methodist Church, followed by burial in Eastern Cemetery. The Lord called her home on Friday, July 11, 2008, at her home.
She was born Sept. 5, 1924, to the late John Henry Walker and Mary Harris Walker. She was raised by her grandmother, Mary Harris and aunt, Lillie Kirby “Aunt Pink” after the death of her mother at the age of 10. She professed a hope in Christ at an early age, at Wesley United Methodist Church where she served as secretary of the United Methodist Women, president of the Usher Board and secretary of Council on Ministries. She was a member of the administrative board and Super Senior and was church historian. She also served as secretary of Claysburg Urban Renewal committee, secretary of AARP, past Worthy Matron of Jericho Chapter 7, Order of Eastern Star, past District Deputy Grand Matron for District 5, past Grand Youth Supervisor, past Grand Nurse Supervisor and past grand public relations for District 5. She was a member of NAACP, Red Hat Society and Wednesday Night Bible Study. She was an alumnus of Old Taylor High School.
Survivors include her children, Ronald G. Ellis Sr. and wife, Alfreda, Warren A. Ellis Jr. and wife, Dianne, David E. Ellis Sr., Phillip L. Ellis and wife, Judy, Steven M. Ellis Sr. and Tyra M. Ellis, all of Jeffersonville and Terri M. Ellis, James M. Ellis, Lynn K. Windley and husband, Mark, Joel T. Ellis and Patricia S. Booth and husband, Kenneth, all of Kentucky; 31 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; best friend (sister) Mattie Moore; stepsisters, Bonnie and Alma Overton; nieces, Norma J. Handy, of Atlanta, Janice Cummins, of Louisville and Johnnie Mae Walker, of El Cajon, Calif.; nephews, Lavelle Walker, of San Diego and John Jones, of Indianapolis; three very special relatives, Hattie Washington, Flora Clipper and Helen Bryant; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Warren A. Ellis Sr., brother, Johnnie Walker, sister, Eva Clipper and nephew, Andrew Jackie Carter.
Visitation at the church will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Eastern Star services will be at 7:30 p.m. at the church.
Mason Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
