Thomas E. ‘Tom’ Conrad, Sr., 63; Vietnam War Army veteran
Funeral services for Thomas E. “Tom” Conrad Sr., 63, of Madison will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18 at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive, Madison, with interment in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion. He died Saturday, July 12, 2008, along with his wife, in a motorcycle accident on State Route 421 near Versailles.
He was born June 4, 1945, in Peru, Ind. to the late Edgar H. and Herma Runkle Conrad. He was raised in Logansport and was a graduate of Caston High School in Fulton. He was inducted in the U.S. Army on April 30, 1964 in Indianapolis and rose to the rank of Specialist Four. He served during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on April 28, 1967 at Fort Meade, Md. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and Markmanship Badge. He remained in the Army Reserves until Apr. 29,1970. He resided in the Madison area since 1983. He was employed earlier in life with Exide and UPS. He retired after 14 years of service from Roadway Express. He enjoyed driving a truck for 30 years until his retirement. He was a 30-year member of the Teamster’s Union. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Jefferson Post 9, the American Legion, Madison VFW Post 1969; FOP “Stacks of Power;” Madison Moose Lodge 765; and the former Madison Eagles Lodge. He enjoyed traveling, socializing with friends and family and was an avid golfer.
Survivors include his sons, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Jeremy S. Conrad and his wife, Maria, stationed at RAF Lakenheath, England, and Thomas E. Conrad Jr. Green of Cove Springs, Fla.; daughter, Jennifer Conrad of Utah; step-daughters, Wendy Abbott Copeland and her husband, Brian, Lexington, and Cindy Benike, of Asheville, N.C.; stepsons, Jeffrey and Michael Absner, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Suzanne Pollard, of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; grandchildren, Skyler, Daniel, Ashley and several other grandchildren; step-grandchildren, Marketta, Jeremy and Cory; nephews, Scott and Richard Wahl and Eddie Benn; niece, Sarah Pollard; and several aunts, uncles and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Carolyn Sue Pender Conrad.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 17, and from 9 a.m. until time of service Friday.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Vanderbilt Veterans Administration Hospital in his memory. Cards will be available at the funeral home.
