Anne Harbison King, formerly of Jeffersonville
A special celebration in honor of the life of Anne Harbison King of Marietta, Ga., formerly of Jeffersonville, will be from 7 to 9 p.m. July 26, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 225 East Market St., Jeffersonville. She died June 25, 2008, while vacationing with her family at St. George Island, Fla.
She grew up in Jeffersonville and taught school in Louisville for more than a decade before moving to Marietta, Ga. She graduated from Jeffersonville High School, where she was student council president and from Indiana State University, where she was president of Alpha Phi sorority, and she held a master’s in education from the University of Louisville. She also taught for 16 years in the Cobb County, Georgia Public Schools, where she was named teacher of the year in 1991-92 for Hollydale Elementary. Since retirement, she sold antiques and collectibles and helped manage the One of a Kind Shoppe in Marietta. She was also the hostess of the city’s best-known Kentucky Derby party at her Marietta home, which drew more than 100 participants every year.
A thanksgiving Mass and reception was held at St. Joseph’s Church in Marietta on June 30 that was attended by 750 people.
Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Mike, an editorial board member at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution; children, Katie, 28, of Pensacola, Fla., and Patrick, 26, of Atlanta; mother, Kathryn Harbison, of Stamping Ground, Ky.; and sisters, Susan Jones, of Pekin and Paula Jean Rodman, of Stamping Ground, Ky.
The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions or volunteering for local animal rescue organizations.
