Victor L. Curtis, 91; World War II veteran

Funeral services for Victor L. Curtis, 91, of New Albany, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Market Street Chapel of Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, New Albany, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. He died Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, in Tipton, Ind.

He was the son of A.V. Curtis and Edith Lindley Curtis and was born on Aug. 5, 1917, in Decatur, Ill. He was raised in Charleston, Ill., and he graduated from high school and was voted “Mr. Trojan” in 1935 (he had a sense of humor) which was their nickname.

Victor married Jane Wright of Harrison County on July 4, 1941

Survivors include a daughter, Vicki, Chicago; a son, Vance, Tipton; and a niece, Sally Schroeder, New Albany.

He was a World War II veteran and was employed by DuPont American Synthetic Rubber Company and retired from Naval Ordnance Station in Louisville. One of his co-workers said upon retirement, as he shook hands in 1983, “Vic, you are a heck of a guy.” And he was. In his last days, one of his caretakers said to the family that “other than my husband, he was the only gentleman I knew.” 

He was a devoted father and family man, as well as an avid golfer and sportsman. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and Valley View Golf Club. The best way to describe our husband and father was that he was a good husband and a good father: that’s life, and that’s what life is all about.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the funeral home.
