Pauline R. Sarles, 91; formerly of Galena

— Funeral services for Pauline R. Sarles, 91, formerly of Galena, will be at 10 a.m. today, Monday, Dec. 31, at Gehlbach & Royse Funeral Home in Corydon with burial to follow at Union Chapel Cemetery on Ind. 66 in Crawford County. She died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012.

On Nov. 21, 1921, area newspapers reported the births of twins Paul and Pauline Ripperdan and the death of their father that same day. Raised in Valley City and a 1940 graduate of New Amsterdam High School, Pauline married John Stanley Sarles on Valentine’s Day 1942. During the war, Pauline followed John to California, living in San Leandro in the Bay Area and also in Oxnard by the Navy Seabee base at Port Hueneme. After the war, they returned to Milltown and later moved to New Albany. Pauline was a founding member of New Albany’s Eastside Church of the Nazarene, and a retiree from the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant at Charlestown and the Floyd County schools.

She is survived by Mark Vance and wife Elaine Sarles of Fallbrook, Calif., and Gary Duane and wife Angela Sarles of Dallas as well as by grandchildren Stephanie, Austin, Hope and April Sarles.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Cecil Windell, Stanley Ripperdan and Paul Ripperdan and sister Betty Payson.
