Larry J. McAllister, 76; Floyds Knobs

— Funeral Mass for Larry J. McAllister, 76, Floyds Knobs, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at St. Mary of the Knobs Chapel, Floyds Knobs, with burial in St. Mary of the Knobs Church Cemetery. He fought a courageous battle with cancer and died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services, New Albany.  

He was born Sept. 27, 1937 in New Albany, to the late Keach R. and Ruth Gerdon McAllister. He graduated from St. Mary’s School in New Albany and was in the first graduating class of Providence High School in 1955. He was a licensed auctioneer and real estate agent. He and his wife, Ann, and their four children, ran the Auction House at 15th and Market in New Albany. He was in the automobile business for 38 years, 17 of those years located at State and Main in New Albany. Larry was a proud Democrat, first elected in 1995 to the Floyd County Council where he served the citizens of Floyd County for 16 years. In his years on the Council he served on many boards and was Council President for many years. Larry never left Floyd County, for this was his home. He was an avid horseman; training and riding thoroughbreds and quarter horses.  He was a founder of the Floyd County Saddle Club. He served six years with the Kentucky Air National Guard and was a member of St. Mary of the Knobs Catholic Church.  

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, the former Joyce Ann Longest; children, Mark S. McAllister and his wife, Peggy, Laura L. Eskridge, and Lisa A. Short and her husband, Paul; his granddaughter, the joy of his life, MaKayla; sister, Patricia Gilchrist and her husband, Robert; and sister-in-law, Diana J. McAllister.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael L. McAllister; and brother, Dr. William “Doc” McAllister.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8 a.m. Saturday, at Kraft Funeral Service, Spring Street Chapel, New Albany.
