Charles James Hambley Sr., 94; Jeffersonville

— Funeral services for Charles James Hambley Sr., 94, Jeffersonville, will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at Corydon Christian Church Disciples of Christ, Corydon. He died Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at his daughter’s home in Corydon.

He was born July 5, 1919, in Pikeville, Ky., to the late William C. and Myrtle Huffman Hambley. A retiree of the Ford Motor Company in Louisville, Charles was a graduate of Purdue University in Mechanical Engineering and a lifetime member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served on the 2nd Ordinance Bomb Disposal Squadron at D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and the Liberation of Mauthausen Concentration Camp.

Survivors include his sons, Gordon Stuart Hambley and his wife, Charlotte, Tomball, Texas, William Carter Hambley and his wife, Susan, Alexandria, Ky., and Charles James Hambley Jr. and his wife, Elaine, Corydon; his daughters, Christina R. Hambley, Pikeville, Ky. and Rev. Mary Jean Wendelin and her husband, Spencer, Corydon; his grandchildren, Dan Wendelin, MD and his wife, Lori Ann, Louisville, Sara Atkins and her husband, Tim, Royston, England, Bryan Hambley, MD  and his wife, Jana Hambley, MD, Cleveland, Ohio, Christina Kankanamge, MD and her husband, Wasula, Houston, Texas, Mary Beth Harris and her husband, Kirk,  Bloomington, James Hambley, Indianapolis, William Hambley, Corydon, and Jennifer Hambley and Benjamin Hambley, both of Alexandria; and his great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Diana and Katie Wendelin, Gavin and Jonathan Atkins and Ruchira Kankanamge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 63 years, Christina Owens Hambley, his brother, William Carter Hambley Jr. MD; and his sisters, Sarah Hambley Henderson, Sister Helen Hambley and Lucille Hambley.

 Rev. Mary Jean Wendelin will officiate and Regina Oglesby will be the pianist.

Visitation will be after 1 p.m., Sunday, at the church.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to Hosparus of Southern Indiana or the charity of your choice.

Pallbearers will be Dan Wendelin, Mary Beth and Kirk Harris, Christina Kankanamge and James, William, Jennifer and Benjamin Hambley.

Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
