Francis J. ‘Frank’ Schmelz

86; of New Albany

Funeral Mass for Francis J. “Frank” Schmelz, 86, of New Albany, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 26, at Holy Family Catholic Church, New Albany, with burial and military honors at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany. He died Monday, May 21, 2012.  

A  U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a devout Catholic, he was a charter member of Holy Family Catholic Church in New Albany. He formerly owned New Albany Auto Body Repair Shop and was a former teacher of auto body mechanics at Prosser School of Technology and Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana. A trusted expert in his field, he was a man of his word who left a legacy of hard work, common sense and honesty.

He  was born July 23, 1925 in Georgetown, to the late Aloysius W. and Grace Miller Schmelz.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda C. Patton and her husband, Doyle, of Crestwood, Ky.; son, Stephen F. Schmelz and his wife, Gayle, of New Albany; brothers, Edward Schmelz and his wife, Lorena, of Lexington, Ky. and Fr. Damian Schmelz, of St. Henry; sister-in-law, Ruby Schmelz, of Corydon; grandchildren, Brian Schmelz and his wife, Leslie, and Patrick Schmelz; and great-grandchildren, Evan and Connor.

In  addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude A. “Trudy” Schmelz, and brother, Leo Schmelz.

Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, at Newcomer Funeral Home, New Albany, with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.
