Marilyn Baxter McCullough

87; formerly of Indianapolis

Funeral services for Marilyn Baxter McCullough, 87, formerly of Indianapolis, and Hilton Head Island, S.C., will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Market Street Chapel of Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, New Albany, with burial to follow at Kraft-Graceland memorial Park. She died Dec. 25, 2012, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Marilyn was born to Dr. Samuel and Mrs. Edith Baxter on May 15, 1925, in New Albany. She graduated from New Albany High School in 1943 and received a B.A. in speech from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1947. While at Indiana, she was active in Kappa Alpha Theta and volunteered at Playbill. She married William P. McCullough, also from New Albany and an alum of Indiana and Purdue universities, on Sept. 20, 1948.

She was deeply devoted to her family, who adored her, and throughout her life she touched many friends with her kindness, gentle spirit, and laughter. Her first thoughts were of serving others; she was a model of how to act in a selfless manner.

She worked as a fifth-grade teacher in Indianapolis, as a Sunday school teacher in Aurora, Ill., and as a Cub Scout leader in East Grand Rapids, Mich. She volunteered for many PTA groups and was an avid reader and bridge player. Later in life, she volunteered at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and served for many years as “Mrs. Claus” for the Indianapolis Theta Alumni Chapter fundraiser.

She is survived by her son, William Baxter McCullough and his wife, Suzelle; a daughter, Lynn McCullough Russell, and her husband, Henry; five grandchildren, John Henry Russell, William McCullough Russell, Bradley Arnold Russell, Erin Leigh McCullough and Laine Emery McCullough; and by three great-grandchildren, Audrey Taylor McCullough, Owen Hunt Russell, and Leo William Russell.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her brother, Samuel Baxter Jr.
