Claudia Gail Newton, 65; Floyds Knobs

— A memorial service for Claudia Gail Newton, 65, Floyds Knobs, were held at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14, at Newcomer Funeral Home, New Albany. She died Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, after visits and sentiments of love from family and friends.

Born in McKeesport, Penn., she later graduated as valedictorian of LaGrange High School in Lake Charles, La. and went on to Tulane University (Newcomb College) in New Orleans. After college, Corky had a long and successful career at Brown & Williamson in Louisville. After an early retirement in 2001, she and her husband spent their winters in Naples, Fla.. She was loving, charming, smart, logical, competitive, loyal, and had a great sense of humor. Most of all, Corky loved, and was devoted to her family.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Lowell Newton; mother, Leona Painter Avner; two children, Ted Newton (fiancé, Abby Gipe) and Natalie Newton Nathanson and husband, Jeff; two grandchildren, Hank and Charlotte Nathanson; sister, Kerri Avner Pepper; brother, Roger Avner; and cousins, including Karlyn Painter Greenberg and husband, Jerry; nieces, Margaux and Miranda Pepper; loving dog, Honey Bear; and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved father, Henry Avner.
