Richard Allen Benich

71; New Albany

A funeral Mass for Richard Allen Benich, 71, New Albany, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at Holy Family Catholic Church, with military honors to follow. Private interment will be in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. He died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, surrounded by his family at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services. 

He was born June 29,1942 in Cleveland, to his late parents, Joseph Paul and Irene (Ostrowski) Benich. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in New Albany, a member of the Jeffersonville Elks and NRA. With God and his values as his guide, he raised five beautiful children with his beloved wife of 48 years, she was his “Queen.” As an American patriot, he enlisted in the Army and served in the special forces as a Green Beret. A fun-loving grandfather, known as “Papa Rich” to his 12 grandchildren, he taught them to live life fully. He was a legend with a personality larger than life and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Pamela Benich; Children, Christine Michals and her husband Dave, Richard Benich and his wife Heather, Pauline McCullum and her husband Scott, Ryan Benich and his wife Anissa and Pamela Hockenberry and her husband Mark; grandchildren, Victor, Keegan, Killian, Kelton, Nora, Maura, Maryn, Nina, Julia, Rogan, Chloe and Richard Lucas; brother, Ray Benich.
