Elbridge Gerry Barker IV

84; Mobile, Ala.

A memorial service for Elbridge Gerry Barker IV, 84, Mobile, Ala., will be at 3 p.m. today, Saturday, Nov. 2, at Calvary Episcopal Church, 821 S. Fourth St., Louisville, with a reception to follow. He died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, in Mobile.

He was born Oct. 4, 1929 in Mobile, Ala., to Elbridge Gerry Barker III and Virginia Weldon Barker. He moved to Louisville at an early age. A graduate of Louisville Male High school, he attended Washington and Lee College for his undergraduate degree, graduating in 1951 then served in the USMC from 1951-1953. Graduating from the University of Louisville School of Law in 1955, he was admitted to the Kentucky Bar the same year, and the Indiana Bar in 1973. Gerry was a well respected lawyer and treated his clients fairly for more than 50 years, closing his practice in 2008. An avid outdoorsman, he spent many afternoons playing golf with his children and grandchildren. A pioneering general aviation pilot in Kentuckiana, Gerry was the first to land at the Clark County airport when it opened. He will be missed by all who knew him. Everyone that knew that Gerry “never had a bad day in his life.”

 Survivors include his sister, Virginia Hower; his children, Jesse Barker, E. Gerry Barker V, Annie Barker, Lisa Walker, Barry Skaggs and Kellye Lay; 13 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

He is predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Ann Barker and more recently, Laura Barker.
