Arla Evelyn Howard

77; of Charlestown

Funeral services for Arla Evelyn Howard, 77, of Charlestown,  will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 27, at Scott Funeral Home’s North Chapel, Jeffersonville, with burial in New Chapel Cemetery. She died Sunday, April 22, 2012, at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services.

She was born in Marysville on Sept. 27, 1934, and graduated from Jeffersonville High School in 1952. She was a homemaker who loved to bring her family together and specialized in making her children’s favorite desserts. She was a devout Christian who faithfully studied her Bible and truly lived out the calling of her favorite verse: “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matt. 6:33). She was a longtime member of New Chapel United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She most recently attended Sellersburg United Methodist Church. She drew inspiration from listening to her husband’s beautiful singing and was a devoted “Nan” who loved her grandchildren more than anything.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, James Lindon Howard Sr.; three children, Dr. James Lindon Howard Jr., and his wife Patti, of Charlestown, Steven Ray Howard and his wife, Lisa, of Carmel, and Tracy Leigh Brooks and her husband, Tim, of Sachse, Texas; three siblings, Joyce Rae Bodine and her husband, Tom, of Jeffersonville, Laura Sue McDonner and her , Jim, of Charlestown, and Robert Royse Watson and his wife, Darnell, of  River, Ky.; and six grandchildren, Micah Leigh Howard, Jordan Zachary Howard, Timothy Noah Brooks and his wife, Aimee, Lauren Elizabeth Howard, Elizabeth Alexandra Brooks and Anna Claire Howard.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Helen Watson; and a grandson, Drew Alexander Brooks.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and after 9 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to New Chapel Cemetery or to Our Daily Bread Devotional.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
