A celebration of life service for Mary P. Hissam, 65, of Greenville, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, Oak Street Chapel, New Albany. She died Thursday, July 4, 2013, at her home.
She was the former Mary Prentice. She grew up in Southern Indiana, attended Jeffersonville High School, and earned a degree from IUS. At the age of 7 she joined the Clarksville swim team and became a premier swimmer, setting many records in Kentucky and participating in the Olympic Trials in New York in 1964. She loved her home in the country, taking walks down by the creek with her husband, Don, and their dogs and cats, nursing the eastern bluebirds that hatched and fledged in the yard. She was a faithful sports fan, attending all her grandsons’ games and hosting frequent post-game swimming parties in her pool. She also loved being with her granddaughter, Zinnia, and she read many, many books to her. She was a care-giver all her life, touched the lives of many people, young and old, and will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know her.
Survivors include her husband, Don Hissam; her daughters, Melissa Miller and Lethia Nall (Simon Furnish); grandsons, Quinton and Lucas Miller; and granddaughter, Zinnia Nall Furnish.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Myrtha Coyte Prentice.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.
Memorial gifts may be made to Hosparus of Southern Indiana.
