General Jackson Hunter II

97; Jeffersonville

—  Funeral services for General Jackson Hunter II, 97, Jeffersonville, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 17, at New Progressive Baptist Church, 4712 Middle Road, Jeffersonville. He died Friday, April 11, 2014.

 He was born on Jan. 10, 1917 in Jeffersonville, to Amos and Dora Madison Hunter Slaughter. He retired from Colgate Palmolive Company and was a member of Indiana Avenue Missionary Baptist Church serving as trustee, head of the Deacon Board as well as Superintendent of Sunday school. He served as second vice president of Ministers & Deacons, Indiana Southeastern District Association of Missionary Baptist Churches, also serving on the “Time and Place" Committee. He also belonged to North Star Lodge 3 F&AM and was Worshipful Master two times; member of Jericho Chapter 7 Order of the Eastern Stars, was also a member of the Constantine Consistory No. 25 in Indianapolis, District Deputy Grand Master of the Southeastern District, District Deputy Grand Master Emeritus, and a 33rd Degree Mason. He was also the original president of “The Roman Eagles,” a gospel quartet and an avid golfer.

 He is survived by seven children: Fred Hunter and his wife, Mary, Rev. Dorothy Williams, Dora Radford and her husband, Alfonso, Frances Able, James Hunter Sr., William Hunter Sr. and his wife, Pamela, and Ronald Hunter Sr. and his wife, Mary; 25 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and a host of great-great grandchildren, cousins and a special friend, Gertrude Gidron.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Daisy Henrietta Kellar Hunter, mother, Dora Madison Hunter Slaughter, and brother ,James Hunter.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, at the New Progressive Baptist Church and after 10 a.m. Thursday, at the church.

Spring Valley Funeral & Cremation Service, New Albany, is entrusted with arrangements.
