Marie Julia Hess Smith 84; of Borden

Funeral Mass for Marie Julia Hess Smith,84, of Borden, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 9, at St. Mary Navilleton Catholic Church, Floyds Knobs, with burial in the church cemetery. She died Sunday, May 5, 2013.

She was born to the late Albert John, Sr., and Theresia Mary Geswein Hess.

She graduated from Lanesville High School and was the accounting manager of the Borden/Tri County Water District. She was a longtime member of St. Mary Navilleton Catholic Church and was formerly active in the St. Anne’s Altar Society and quilting group of the church. A member of the Mount St. Francis Ladies’ Guild, she was well known for visiting the sick and the homebound. A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, she treasured her family. A model of genuine hospitality to all, she will be missed.

She is survived by her children, Connie Schilmiller and her husband, Joe, Fr. Tom Smith, OFM Conv., Mary Jo Mayer and her husband, John, Sam Smith and his wife, Rhonda, Therese Martin and her husband, Bill, Margaret Hoffman and her husband, Kevin, Nick Smith and his wife, Lesa, Eileen Schraffenberger and her husband, David, Doris Ooley and her husband, Mike, and Denis Smith and his wife, Lisa; sisters, Rosetta Smith, Irene Naville and her husband, Bob, and Marcella Naville and her husband, Herman, Jr.; sister-in-law, Frances “Pank” Hess; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren (with five on the way).

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Louis E. “Bud” Smith; sister, Lula Mae Kochert; and brothers, Francis, Wilbur, Albert, Jr., and Melvin Hess.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Newcomer Funeral Home, New Albany, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, and 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church.
