Thelma Louise ‘Mamaw’ Akers

92; New Albany

—  Funeral services for Thelma Louise “Mamaw” Akers, 92, New Albany, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at State Street Baptist Church, New Albany, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany. She died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at Providence Retirement Home, New Albany.

 She was born April 7, 1921, in New Albany, to Landie and Clida Berryman Johnson. She was a founding member of State Street Baptist Church, New Albany and was retired after 31 years as a teachers aide with the New Albany-Floyd County School Corp. She also volunteered her time with Interfaith Community Council in New Albany.

Survivors include her sons, Charles “Chuck” Akers and his wife, Shirley, Crawfordsville, and Dr. Ronald Akers and his wife, Caroline, Gainsville, Fla.; daughter, Voncille Litz and her husband, David, Mint Hill, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. She is also survived locally by family members, Dava Day (Greg) , Russ Davis (Jaime Halberg) and Krista Higdon (Shaun).

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Akers.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, Oak Street Chapel, New Albany, and after 9 a.m. Saturday, at the church.

Expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers may take the form of contributions to State Street Baptist Church or Providence Retirement Home.
