Jo Ann Elliott Nichols, 81; hospital volunteer

— Jo Ann Nichols, 81, Jeffersonville, died peacefully at home surrounded by family Saturday, March 8, 2014.

Born Jan. 7, 1933, in Albany, Ohio, to Charles and Alice Elliott, she was the second oldest of nine children. She started working at an early age, sharing a paper route with her older brother before working in her father’s store in Albany and the Ohio University library.

In later years, she worked for the Kentucky Department of Health and Norton’s Hospital, from which she retired in 1998 after 23 years of service. After retirement, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Clark Memorial Hospital. Jo Ann was known for her commitment to family, quick wit and service to the community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include four children: John “Nick” Nichols of Pinellas Park, FL; Donna Bowles and Kim (Craig) Sandefur, both of Jeffersonville; and Jim Nichols of New Albany; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service for Jo Ann will take place at Coots Funeral Home in Jeffersonville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, with visitation beginning at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Albany United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 74, Albany, Ohio, 45710.
