Robert E. “Bob” Thompson

85; Port Charlotte, Fla.

— Robert E. “Bob” Thompson, 85, Port Charlotte, Fla., went to be with the Lord Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at  Peace  River Regional Medical Center, Port Charlotte.

Bob was born July 15, 1928, in Caskey, Ky., to G.B. and Fanny Mary (Hendricks) Thompson and moved to this area 28 years ago from New

Albany. He worked as  a  machine operator before retiring from  Phillip Morris  and also worked for 16  years with the Texas  Rangers in Port Charlotte. He managed a Babe Ruth baseball team  in Indiana, a church softball team, played amateur  baseball, fast pitch softball,  and basketball in a church league. Bob was a member of the Port Charlotte Shuffleboard Club, U.S. Bowling Congress,  and volunteered with the Punta Gorda Alliance Church bread ministry where he was a member. He was also an avid golfer, bowler, and shuffleboard player. 

Bob was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his loving wife of  63  years, Dolores (Flock) Thompson, Port  Charlotte; daughters, Karen T. DeLacy and her husband, Roger,

Punta Gorda, Fla, Kathy M. Marshall, Arcadia, Fla., and Robin K.  Purlee, and her husband, Daniel, Sellersburg; sister, Nita Gervin, and her  husband, Levern, Fenwick, Mich.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four nieces; and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ramona Joan Crady; and a grandson.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Paul Schelm Funeral Home, 12687 SW County Road 769 (Kings Highway),

Lake Suzy, Fla. A funeral service will follow with burial with military honors at 11 a.m. Monday, at Sarasota National Cemetery.
