Mary Katherine Becher, 92; New Albany

A Funeral Mass for Mary Katherne Becher, 92, New Albany, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at Holy Family Catholic Church, New Albany, with burial to follow in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. She passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013. 

She was born on Oct. 7, 1920, in Mobile, Ala. to her late parents, William and Mabel LeBlanc Barkman. She lived in Mobile, Ala., Louisville, Huntingburg, Ind., and New Albany. 

She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a homemaker and worked in retail sales in downtown Louisville stores, including The Joy Shop and Ben Snyder’s. 

Mary Katherine was a volunteer at the Kentucky Derby Museum, a member of the Kentucky Derby Museum Outrider’s Society, and was a frequent rider of TARC buses. She was a member of Hobart Beach VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary. 

She and her husband were founding members of St. John Vianney’s parish and worshipped there for 33 years. In New Albany, they belonged to Holy Family. Her last six years she lived at Providence Retirement Home, made friends, loved to read and played Bingo. 

She is survived by her daughter, Jean Geswein and her husband, Gary, Palmyra, Ind.; two grandchildren, Pamela Weber and her husband, Mark, Reston, Va., and Christopher Geswein and his wife, Mallory, Columbia, Mo.; and three great-grandsons, Ryan and Evan Weber of Virginia and Liam Geswein and twins on the way in Missouri. 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Ambrose Becher, who died in 1998. 

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Kraft Funeral Service, Spring Street Chapel, New Albany.
