John Martin, 72; Hixson, Tenn.

— Funeral services for John Martin, 72, of Hixson, Tenn. will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel, Hixson, Tenn. He died suddenly Monday, Aug. 19, 2013.

He was born, Feb. 25, 1941, in New Albany, to Butler and Margaret Martin who predeceased him. He played basketball for the New Albany Bulldogs in High School where he graduated in 1959. His team played in the semi finals of the Indiana State High School Championship his senior year. His athletic ability and academic excellence earned him a college scholarship to Tennessee Wesleyan where he met his wife and began his family.

John began his career after graduating from the University of Chattanooga with a degree in Chemistry. He worked for Standard Brands, Riechold, BASF, GAF throughout his career. He retired from ParaChem Chemical Company as President in 2007. He was the holder of four patens for his inventions in the latex industry. His love for Kentucky basketball and knowledge of the Kentucky Derby was unequaled. His hobbies included golf, college sports, and horse racing. He will be missed by his family and a host of friends who were privileged to know him.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Dianne Killough Martin; sons, Doug  Martin and his wife, Kathy, and Greg Martin and his wife, Sheila, both of Hixson; daughter, Cindy Cronan and her husband, Jeff,  Chattanooga; brothers, Ronnie Martin, New Albany, and Gary Martin, Clarksville; and sister, Elaine Ang, Clarksville.

His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. They are Benjamin Martin, Austin Martin, Hayden Cronan, Jay Martin, Bryce Cronan, Patrick Martin, Peyton Martin, Jack Martin, and Maggie Martin.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 Thursday, and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be given to Chattanooga Community Kitchen, P.O. Box 11203, Chattanooga, TN 37401, in memory of John.
