Joseph P. Karem, 88; New Albany

A funeral service celebrating the life of Joseph P. Karem, 88, New Albany, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at the Market Street Chapel of Seabrook, Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, New Albany. He passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at Norton Hospice Pavilion. 

He was born in Louisville and was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was the former owner and operator of Karem’s Meats and was a talented and wonderful singer, having won first place at the St. Jude ALSAC Convention talent contest in 1960. He was an avid UK fan, loved to garden and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. 

More importantly, he was a loving and generous dad and Papa Joe to his family, who were his life. 

Survivors include his son, Greg Karem and his wife, Debbie; five daughters, Debbie Eckles and her husband, Connie, Lynn Hallman, Andrea Greene, Kim LaPilusa and her husband, Frank, and Becky DuVall and her husband, Joey; his sister, Evelyn Marks; his half-sister, Peggy English and her husband, Wally; his grandchildren, Emily Byrnes and her husband, Matt, Kendall Rutledge and his wife, Terry, Sean, Nicole, Abram and Camille Hallman, Eric Greene and his wife, Tiffany, Brage Greene and his wife, Brandy, Stephanie Olson and her husband, Alex, Taylor Gilley and her husband, Andrew, Kaelin and Landon Mindel, Jamie Nicholson and her husband, Nathan, and Ben DuVall and his wife, Sara; his aunt, Christine Borders and her husband, Tommy; and 19 great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Jane Schoeffler Karem; his parents, Joseph P. Karem Sr., Camilla Joseph Karem and Myrtle Karem; and his half-brother, Richard Karem. 

The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the Hosparus team for the care and comfort they provided our dad and our family. 

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. 

Memorial contributions may be given to Hosparus of Southern Indiana.
