Lawrence A. “Tom” Schafer

82; of Memphis

A funeral Mass for Lawrence A. “Tom” Schafer, 82, of Memphis, will be at 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, Dec. 18, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Charlestown, with burial to follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery. He died peacefully at his home on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012.

He was born June 27, 1930 in Charlestown, to Ernest and Mary Margaret Meyer Schafer. He was a farmer and a cattleman. He had also been employed at the Indiana Army Ammunition Plan and by the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service and was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He loved family, hard work and winemaking. He was the 1986 Clark County Soil and Water Conservation District Farmer of the Year, a founding member of the Clark County Cattleman’s Association, a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.  

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, the former Marie J. Hecker; daughters, Teresa Anderson and her husband, Joe, Sharon Hubbard and her husband, Wayne, and Joann Ettel and her husband, Dennis; a son, Lawrence Schafer, Jr. and his wife, Dina; a sister, Mary Lou Yount; a son-in-law, Greg Harper; nieces, nephews, 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Herman DeVary; a brother, John Schafer and his daughter, Mary Suzanne Harper.

Visitation at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown was from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, and after 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to St. Michael’s Building Fund.
