Emily Holmes Raney

100; of New Albany

—  A celebration of life service for Emily Holmes Raney, 100, of New Albany, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Homes, Oak Street Chapel, New Albany, with burial in Fairview Cemetery, New Albany. She died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in Madison.

  She was born Dec. 3, 1912 to Basil Clyde Holmes and Julia Greenwood Holmes in Jeffersonville. She was the widow of New Albany’s Hall of Fame basketball coach Gordon “Britches” Raney who died at the age of 41. She was a graduate of New Albany High School and Hanover College where she majored in elementary education. 

Survivors include  two daughters, Julia Raney Litzsinger (companion Carl Rew) and Phyllis Raney Thomas and her husband, Edward; five grandchildren, Hilary Bear and her husband, Daniel, Christian Litzsinger and his wife, Kristina, Gregory Raney Thomas (companion Amanda), Sarah Elizabeth Litzsinger, and Catherine Anne Marrano and her husband, David; and eight great- grandchildren.

 She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Col. Robert G. Holmes.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.
