Richard E. Schmidt, 80; of New Albany

— Funeral Mass for Richard E. Schmidt, 80, of New Albany, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, New Albany, with entombment in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany. He died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Mercy-Providence Retirement Home, New Albany. 

He retired from South Central Bell and was a United States Army veteran. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Cardinal Ritter 1221 and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Albany. He was born June 3, 1932, in New Albany, to the late Herman S. and Mary A. Schmelz Schmidt. 

He is survived by his children, Brian Schmidt and his wife, Ruth, Tommy Schmidt and his wife, Laura, Claudia Hernandez and her husband, Joe, and Jackie Karem and her husband, Tony; siblings, Bill Schmidt and his wife, Anna, Carl Schmidt and his wife, Susie, and Evelyn Banet and her husband, Raymond “Junie;” and 15 grandchildren.  

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Ashley Schmidt, and siblings, Herb Schmidt, Nettie Jones, and Monica Haskell.  

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Newcomer Funeral Home , New Albany.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staffs at Azalea Hills Assisted Living and Mercy-Providence Retirement Home.
