Glendolyn Rhe Embry Tomes

86, of Underwood

Funeral services for Glendolyn Rhe Embry Tomes, 86, of Underwood, will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Garr Funeral Home, Sellersburg, with burial in Flat Wood Cemetery, Morgantown, Ky. She died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at her home surrounded by family.

She was the daughter of the late Eclat Armous and Frances Ellen Lacefield Embry. She became a member of Fairview Church of Christ in Butler County, Ky., in 1941. This was the congregation her great-grandfather, Bro. Cader Embry began his ministry in the 1800’s. She was a member of Henryville Church of Christ for 30 years and was currently a member of Scottsburg Church of Christ. She was instrumental in helping get the Ladies Auxiliary started for the Memphis Volunteer Fire Department where she served as the first chaplain of the Ladies Auxiliary and board member.

Survivors include her husband, Emogene Tomes; two daughters, Carolyn “Grandma Red” Howard and her husband, Bob, of Memphis, and Pamela Leftwitch and her husband, Bill, of Henryville; five sons, Steven Tomes and his wife, Susan, of Underwood, Timmy Tomes, of Morgantown, Ky., Jimmy  Tomes, of Springfield, Ky., Stanley Tomes and his wife, Cookie, of Inglis, Fla., and Kermit Tomes and his wife, Rhonda, of Henryville; a brother, Cody Embry and his wife, Monnie, of  Henryville; four sisters, Costellla Phelps, of Morgantown, Ky., Diana Bierly and her husband, Jim, of Morgantown, Ky., Peggy Barrett and her husband, Martin, of Pekin, and Norma Cavanaugh and her husband, Bobby, of Sellersburg; 23 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded  in death by two sons, Kimmel Gene and Getsel Edward Tomes, grandson, Steveson Alan Tomes II, and sisters, Blanche Embry Tomes, Bernice Embry Hunt and Doris Embry Merritt.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 6, and after 9 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home.
