William Joseph Saurer

81; Jeffersonville

— A funeral Mass for William Joseph Saurer , 81, Jeffersonville, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, at Saint Augustine Catholic Church, Jeffersonville, with burial to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. He died Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Clark Memorial Hospital with his loving son and daughter by his side.

Bill was born on March 8, 1933, in Louisville. Soon after graduating from Flaget High School, he joined the United States Navy where he served with distinction during the Korean conflict. After his discharge from the Navy he was married and moved to Jeffersonville, where he lived the remainder of his life. He had a long and successful career in plant maintenance and as a master machinist, eventually retiring from Reynolds Metals in 1994. He was an active member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union Local 681 for most of his working years and continuing after retirement.

In retirement he was an active volunteer, including Actor’s Theatre Louisville, Parents on Patrol at Parkview Middle School, the Jeffersonville-Clark County Building Authority, and as an expert handyman for his extended family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne M. Saurer Gipson (Todd); his son, Stephen C. Saurer (Amy); his grandchildren, Maxwell B. Malone, Marianne E. Malone and Michelle E. Malone; and two sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews and close friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Harry Conrad and Mary Ada Nall Saurer; his beloved wife of 55 years, Marilyn Kannapel Saurer; his brothers, John M. Saurer, Paul B. Saurer, James I. Saurer and Harry A. Saurer; and his sisters, Mary Margaret Saurer Sommers and Helen L. Saurer.

Visitation and celebration of Bill’s life will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at E. M. Coots’ Sons Funeral Home.
