Keep Goodwill in mind when donating

BridgePointe Services Goodwill of Southern Indiana is celebrating! The week of May 4 through 10 is nationally recognized as Goodwill Industries Week.

At BridgePointe, we provide services to children and adults with disabilities and disadvantages. Our services are designed to help our clients reach their potential and gain independence. When you donate or shop at one of our 11 Southern Indiana Goodwill stores, you are helping provide those vital services.

When you donate or shop, you are also supporting one of the largest recycling efforts in the region. Your donations to Goodwill divert thousands of pounds of gently used items from ending up in our landfills. Those items are resold to others who need a bargain on children’s clothing or those that just love searching for those one-of-a-kind treasures. Items that can not be resold in our Goodwill stores are sold for recycling, and those funds too are invested in services to people with disabilities.

We appreciate the Southern Indiana community’s ongoing support of our mission and we hope that you will join us in celebrating our successes during Goodwill Industries Week. Please keep us in mind when cleaning out your closets or wondering what to do with your unsold yard sale items. Your donations are greatly appreciated and help support those who need help gaining their independence.

For updated donation guidelines or if you would like more information on our services, please visit our Web site at bridgepointe.org.

At BridgePointe Services Goodwill, our mission is to “Fulfill Dreams and Change Lives” and we accomplish that because of your support and assistance. Thank you.

— Caren Marshall, CEO, BridgePointe Services Goodwill

Reader: Thanks for fixing Floyd County road

Thank you, Floyd County Highway Department. Yes, you (with a little nudge from our only Democrat County Commissioner) at least made the road through Floyds Knobs passable.

Now, we need the people who are responsible for tearing up the road to put it back the way it should be. The county highway department and the taxpayers should not have to bear this burden.

— Agnes Shirley, Floyds Knobs

U.S. needs to help save lives abroad

Sen. Hillary Clinton’s recent visit to Jeffersonville gave us a front seat to history in this exciting and historic election.

I was lucky enough to attend the rally as a proud member of the ONE Campaign, an advocacy effort dedicated to fighting global diseases, such as AIDS and malaria, and combating extreme poverty around the world.

Throughout this campaign, ONE volunteers like me have attended countless campaign stops to educate voters and engage the candidates on these vital issues. We talk with voters about how expanding America’s effective lifesaving work abroad can save millions of lives, create new friendships around the world and shine a spotlight on America’s good and compassionate values. And every chance we get, we ask the candidates themselves about their plans to combat global poverty and end deaths from preventable diseases. We urge them to make these issues a priority in their foreign policy.

As all elections are, this election is about the future. It is about what America wants to be, both at home and abroad. In this interconnected and dangerous world, I hope our future includes leading the effort to save lives and end avoidable suffering through medicine and basic needs like water and food. I believe this can be America’s next great legacy — and it is a legacy that America’s next president can spark.

— Tina Cain, Sellersburg

Reader: Hypocrisy in action

Jeffersonville Councilman Keith Fetz complained bitterly about the cost of Vice President Cheney’s visit. Why no complaint about the cost of Obama?

— Stephen W. Voelker, Jeffersonville
