CHEERS AND JEERS — For Dec. 28-29

... to all the service and retail workers out there that put up with cranky and impatient shoppers like myself during the holidays.

I can’t think of a much more thankless gig. We expect you to wait on us hand and foot. And with a smile, dang it. What do you mean you don’t have my size? Where’s the mate to this shoe? My salad is missing a crouton!

Plenty of folks behind the retail counter or in front of the grill make it their mission to please you while working odd hours. Early bird special? Clock in at 4 a.m.

So cheers to you, retail and service workers. I’ll forgive you the next time I’m short a crouton.

— Assistant Editor Jason Thomas

... to the New Albany High School performing arts groups for putting on an unforgettable “Holiday Spectacular.”

What an enjoyable evening to witness so many talented performers and directors all gathered on one stage. Kudos as well to Mr. Lee Kelly for joining in on the fun. Best wishes to all in 2014.

— Bill and Carol Bourland, New Albany

... to New Albany Mayor Jeff Gahan for visiting each of the residents at the Mt. Tabor Road/Klerner Lane intersection to inform them that the roundabout tentatively planned for that intersection has been scrapped in favor of the current four-way stop.

— Dennis Feiock, New Albany

... to the Sellersburg Town Council for showing the wisdom and integrity to change the town’s voting method to fairvoting.

Because of this change, each district’s council representative will now be elected by the voters within his or her district, providing true district representation. It takes character to do the right thing for the town you represent, even though it might not benefit you personally.

Council members from other towns could undoubtedly learn a thing or two from the actions of their counterparts in Sellersburg.
