CHEERS & JEERS: June 28-29, 2014

... to all the student athletes and coaches from Clark and Floyd counties honored at Thursday’s inaugural NTSPY Awards, which was attended by about 300 people.

Thanks to all of our sponsors, and to Indiana University Southeast, which provided a great venue in the Ogle Center to host the event.

Look for an even bigger and better event next year.

... to those who stop to assist stranded motorists. Only if you can offer assistance by calling someone to help, you can be that person’s Angel for a day.

You do not realize how a friendly face can provide assistance to those stranded on the highway until you are that stranded person. Last Sunday, myself along with my brother and sister-in-law, two great-nephews ages 8 and 12 and two small dogs spent five hours stranded on the Western Kentucky Parkway near Greenville, Ky., with a second blowout on the camper. We had already used the spare tire, it was Sunday and we could not find anyone open to deliver a tire to the site. Not one person stopped to see if they could provide any assistance.

Five hours later, AAA finally located a 24-hour emergency service that delivered and mounted two tires on the camper. We finally arrived at Kentucky Lake 12 hours after we left home — a trip that should have taken four hours.

But on a positive note, once we arrived at Big Bear Resort a fantastic time was had by all, and my brother purchased two more new tires before the return trip home.

So if you are planning a camping trip this summer, please make sure the tires are not dry-rotted before you hit the road.
