CHEERS AND JEERS: March 22-23, 2014

CHEERS

... To press foreman John Vissing for celebrating 40 years of employment at the News and Tribune. Four decades of working at the same location, in the newspaper industry, should be applauded. John is great at what he does, and has had to deal with a lot of different personalities during his 40 years. He has done it all with a smile. Here’s to 20 or 30 more years Mr. Vissing.

CHEERS

... To the Floyd Central and New Albany High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp. units for recent honors.

Floyd Central’s color guard — made up of Kayla Jones, Nathan Cabral, Destiny DeSpain and Alexis Martin — won the Navy’s Area 3 East Regional Championship Drill Meet while New Albany cadets brought home six trophies at the same meet. Those cadets included Chandler Berry, Briendyn Berry, Danielle Brown and Ty Demuth. Great Job!

Cheers to Coach [Jim] Shannon for this year’s team and the winning New Albany’s 49th sectional crown. This team was one to be proud of as they nearly reversed an earlier loss to Bloomington North. It appears to some including myself, that the officials let some fouls slide that could have been called on BN. I do wonder if  some of those may have been from the simple fact that the Bloomington teams, North and South, play a different brand of ball. This brings me to my jeer. Go Dogs!

Jeers to those that set the schedule for the boys’ team. We are in the 4-A classification, but play only 13 teams of that same class. If you will look online at John Harrell’s excellent webpage, NA has won more boys’ basketball games going back 21 years, than any team in Indiana. Are we that good or could the program be toughened and better at preparing us for tournament games? I understand that there are certain teams on our schedule that are money makers for us, but there is room for improvement.
