NEWS AND TRIBUNE LETTERS — For Jan. 16

(Continued)

Our city’s stray animals fare better at our state-of-the-art animal shelter than do the city’s stray humans.

Recently in an article in The Courier -Journal the homeless issue was addressed. The new Jeffersonville-Clarksville Homeless Task Force will have its first public forum at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 22 in the council chambers at Jeffersonville City Hall, 500 Quarter Master Court. According to the story, Jeffersonville Mayor Mike Moore stated he wanted to develop a regional plan to better address the issue. Moore said he hopes to bring together those interested in combating homelessness for in- depth discussions that lead to action. He also said Clarksville leaders agreed to come, but that New Albany officials weren’t interested.

The latter saddens me. With all the hoopla over our city’s bicentennial, it seems the perfect year to build a long-overdue shelter. We — churches, organizations and individuals — who care about God’s suffering people, can make this happen. Let‘s make 2013 a good year for New Albany and do the right thing.
