Man caught in act of burglary, theft in Jeffersonville

Video games, coins make up loot

JEFFERSONVILLE — A man was arrested on preliminary charges of burglary and theft Wednesday after he reportedly broke into a home.

George Thomas Daugherty, 29, first caught the attention of a 73-year-old neighbor of the Birchwood home he is claimed to have unlawfully entered about 10:30 a.m. The neighbor, who had been on the front porch of his home, called authorities after taking notice of Daugherty, of Dellinger Drive in Jeffersonville.

The neighbor reported seeing Daugherty walk down the street, approach a neighboring home and look though its front window before entering through a side door. The neighbor told police he knew that the homeowners were away at work at the time.

Jeffersonville police arrived at the home and approached both the front and the back of the residence. According to a police report, Daugherty was taken into custody near the front door of the home.

He is believed to have stolen several video games and 10 sets of United States mint proof quarters. Police asked Daugherty if he lived at the home, and he said he did not. When asked why he was at the residence, Daugherty said, “Taking stuff,” according to the police report.

Online court records show Daugherty appeared for an advisement of rights hearing in Clark County Circuit Court No. 1 Thursday where he was placed under a $30,000 court-cash bond, but he has not yet been charged in the incident.

He is expected to be charged during an initial hearing which had been scheduled for today.

At the time of his arrest, Daugherty had a warrant out for his arrest from Clark County Circuit Court after he failed to appear for an initial hearing Nov. 19 following a charge of class D felony theft believed to have taken place Nov. 5.
