10 P.M. UPDATE: Single-car crash kills driver on I-65

Tennessee woman killed; wreck shut down interstate for a short time near Scottsburg exit

SCOTTSBURG — The driver of a minivan died after her vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic on Interstate 65 southbound in Scottsburg on Friday afternoon.

Shortly after 2 p.m., a 2001 Ford Windstar traveling north ran into the median at mile marker 28.5, across the southbound lanes and into a wooded area on the west side of I-65, according to a press release from Indiana State Police. Mary Lou Gustus, 71, from Paris, Tenn., was killed in the accident. The preliminary death investigation by Scott County Coroner Jerry Buchanan revealed that Gustus likely suffered a medical condition causing the crash. It is unknown if Gustus' death was a result of the impact of the crash, the likely medical condition, or a combination of both, the release says.

The southbound lanes of the interstate were temporarily closed.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Department, Scottsburg police and fire departments and Scott County EMS assisted in the crash response.
