Victim in fatal crash identified

SCOTTSBURG — Police have identified the driver of a minivan who was killed Friday after the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic on Interstate 65 southbound in Scottsburg.

71-year-old Mary Lou Gustus, of Paris, Tenn., was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident shortly after 2 p.m., according to a release from Indiana State Police.

According to ISP, Gustus’ 2001 Ford Windstar was traveling north when it ran into the median at mile marker 28.5, across the southbound lanes and into a wooded area on the west side of I-65.

The preliminary death investigation by Scott County Coroner Jerry Buchanan revealed the driver likely suffered a medical condition causing the crash. It is unknown if the driver’s death was a result of the impact of the crash, the likely medical condition, or a combination of both, the release says.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Department, Scottsburg police and fire departments and Scott County EMS assisted in the crash response.
