Attorneys meet in Gibson murder trial

Judge denies defense’s request to continue

NEW ALBANY —  In preparation of the first of three William Clyde Gibson murder trials, attorneys argued a variety of motions in a Floyd County court Friday.

More than 10 motions related to the upcoming capital trial were raised during the hearing, but Floyd County Superior Court Judge Susan Orth ruled on only one motion by denying the trail be continued to a later date.

The other motions are currently under Orth’s review.

Jury selection in the trial for the murder of 75-year-old Christine Whitis, who was found in Gibson’s home in the 800 block of Woodbourne Drive April 2012, is scheduled to begin Sept. 23. The following jury trial is set for Oct. 21.

At the completion of the Whitis trial, the court is expected to proceed to the trial for the murder of Stephanie Kirk, 35, of Charlestown, who was found buried in Gibson’s backyard April 27, 2012. The trial for Kirk’s murder is also expected to be a capital case.

Gibson also faces charges in the death of 45-year-old Karen Hodella, who was found murdered near the Ohio River in January 2003.
