Police: Man robbed at Cracker Barrel

SELLERSBURG — Sellersburg police reported that a man was knocked down and robbed of his wallet Thursday while outside of Cracker Barrel restaurant.

Michael W. Bickham, 30, was arrested soon afterward, following a brief foot pursuit from the Triangle Drive business.

Chief Russ Whelan with the Sellersburg Police Department said the robbery took place around 8 p.m. as the “elderly” man was walking into or out of the restaurant.

He said Bickham, who is considered a transient, pushed the man onto the ground and ran from the area after taking the man’s wallet.

Whelan was reached by phone about 11 a.m. Friday. He said at the time that he was canvassing the wooded area — where Bickham had run from Cracker Barrel and was later arrested — for the stolen wallet.

“I don’t like people that pick on the elderly,” Whelan said, adding he had been searching for the man’s wallet for nearly two hours, but had not yet located the stolen property.

Whelan said the man attempted to chase down Bickham after the robbery, but it was SPD who located him in a thicket of trees about a mile from the restaurant several minutes after the alleged crime.

He said an officer was hospitalized for a laceration to his eye that was received during the pursuit. Whelan said the officer is now doing fine.

Bickham’s preliminary charges and upcoming court dates were not available as of press time.
