ISP trooper assisting motorists results in arrests

Car reported stolen; meth found in vehicle

CLARK COUNTY — After an Indiana State Police trooper stopped to assist a disabled car Thursday along Interstate 65, it was discovered the vehicle was stolen, and one of the occupants was in possession of methamphetamine, ISP reported.

The vehicle’s occupants, Richard F. Shellman, 34, and Janice M. Gonzalez, 26, both of Louisville, were arrested during the incident. The trooper found the 2010 Ford Taurus parked in the emergency lane of I-65 near the 12-mile marker in Clark County during the evening hours.

“When he spoke to the occupants — a female in the driver’s seat and a male subject outside of the car — he was informed they were out of gas and needed assistance,” ISP reported in a news release.

The trooper soon discovered, however, the Taurus was reported stolen after running a check on the vehicle.

Shellman has been preliminarily charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

According to ISP, Gonzalez first gave false information of her identity. After she was placed into custody, a search of the vehicle yielded approximately 2.2 ounces of methamphetamine.

Shellman and Gonzalez were both taken to the Michael L. Becher Adult Correctional Complex in Jeffersonville.

ISP reported that after arriving to the jail, officers conducted a detailed search of Gonzalez and her property and found a digital scale and two blue pills, believed to be prescription medication.

Gonzalez has been preliminarily charged with dealing in methamphetamine — over three grams, possession of methamphetamine — over three grams, maintaining a common nuisance, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and false informing.
