Fire hits Jeffersonville watering hole

Slammers Tavern damaged in outdoor fire

JEFFERSONVILLE — A fire Thursday afternoon burned the rear portion of Slammers Tavern, located at 900 E. Chestnut St., Jeffersonville.

No one was injured during the fire, said Jeffersonville Fire Department Maj. Mike McCutcheon.

He reported that the fire began on the building’s exterior about 3:30 p.m. following a cookout and improper disposal of hot charcoal briquettes. He said the charcoal used during the cookout was dumped onto the ground near the back of the building after the cookout had come to a close.

The fire caused minor damage to the lounge and dining area of the business, but more significant damage resulted in the structure’s second story, which serves as a residential dwelling.

The residents will be forced to find a new home due to the damage from the fire and the necessary actions taken by firefighters to reach the flames inside the walls, McCutcheon said.

He said the firefighters had the fire under control about 25 minutes after their arrival.

McCutcheon took time to remind the public that when using a charcoal grill during summer events, always properly extinguish the briquettes before removing them from the grill. He said as an extra precaution, do not ever dispose of recently used briquettes near any structure or other flammable items.
