Schook not present for NAPD Merit Commission meeting

NAPD officer alleged misconduct, seeking $500k

NEW ALBANY — An officer who has claimed mistreatment failed to appear before the New Albany Police Merit Commission Thursday after requesting to be heard by the body.

NAPD officer Laura Schook — who has filed notice that she intends to seek $500,000 and a promotion through tort claims based on her allegations against the department — was slated on the commission’s agenda, but was not present during the public meeting.

In May, Schook told the commission she had reported misconduct by fellow officers to her superior, then-Maj. Sherri Knight, in 2010.

Knight — who was chief of the department until stepping down in May after the issue became public — didn’t address the problems, according to Schook.

Instead, Knight told the officers in question that she had made allegations against them, according to Schook. Her claims were that those officers were working for their private businesses while on the city clock.

Schook said she received backlash from the incident including the lack of a promotion and failure to receive backup from officers on certain occasions.

Knight’s replacement, NAPD Chief Todd Bailey, and the city’s administration announced in late May that the Indiana State Police would be asked to assist in the investigation of the incidents.

No public announcements about that investigation have been made. During a commission meeting last month, a call was made for any motions related to an executive session held over the Schook issue.

No motions were made, and there were no other comments made about the matter.

Commission members said Thursday they had been advised by their attorney, Brandon Smith, not to talk about the executive session.

They added they would not discuss the matter with Schook through any other means than before the commission, meaning no e-mail, phone or written messages.
