SLICK SPOTS: Weather causing traffic fits in Southern Indiana

Portions of I-265, I-65 and I-64 extremely hazardous

> SOUTHERN INDIANA — Emergency response officials were busy this morning responding to traffic accidents throughout Clark, Floyd and Harrison counties.

And it’s not certain when roadways would be safe for travel.

Officials are warning motorists to stay off roadways, unless travel is absolutely necessary.

The Indiana State Police reported that l-65 northbound was closed at mile marker 20 due to an accident.

Floyd County Sheriff’s Major Jeff Topping and Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Brian Meyer both said that those who must be in their vehicles during this inclement weather to “slow down.”

Meyer is warning motorists to drive well below posted speed limits and to keep extra space between other vehicles on the roadways.

“The roads are extremely hazardous at this time,” Topping said about 11:45 a.m.

Topping said numerous accidents occurred this morning that has required responses of ISP, Greenville Police Department, Georgetown Police Department and the FCSD.

Harrison County closed a section of Interstate 64 near the Corydon area because of the weather, Topping said.

A call was made to the Indiana State Police Sellersburg Post about 11:30 a.m., and the post command trooper said the agency was too busy to take calls from media.

Meyer said he has heard reports of Interstate 65 being closed to motorists near Henryville. He said vehicle are being directed from the interstate to the Henryville exit and onto Ind. 31.

Meyer said reports have come in for possibly four accidents along I-65 and multiple accidents along county roads.

He said at about noon that all calls in Clark County have reported property damage only.

“It appears that road conditions are continuing to get worse,” Meyer said. “If you don’t have to go out, don’t.”
