Clark County school board member arrested in Tennessee

Teresa Perkins accused of felony shoplifting

JEFFERSONVILLE — A Greater Clark County Schools board of trustees member was indicted on felony theft charges in Franklin, Tenn., in May.

Teresa Perkins, district seven representative, is indicted on a charge of theft of merchandise over $1,000 but under $10,000. She’s accused of stealing more than $1,400 of jewelry from The Shoppes on Main on Feb. 15, according to the Franklin Police Department’s official media release website.

Perkins directed comment to her attorney, Larry Wilder.

Wilder said his colleague in Tennessee, Sandra Wells, will help handle the case. He said Perkins has complied with law enforcement, but he and his team are working on how they’ll approach the case.

“Upon being notified that there were these allegations in Franklin, arrangements were made for Teresa to go there,” Wilder said. “We secured the services of [Wells] in Tennessee and we’ll address each of the issues that have been raised.”

He said he hopes the community will hold off on any judgment of the case until the facts are presented in court.

“I think this is a situation that there’s no need for anyone to rush to any conclusions about what may or may not have occurred,” Wilder said. “We need to spend some time to think through and see what happened to determine what occurred.”

The police department’s release says Perkins took about 30 pieces of jewelry from the store, but purchased $55.50 worth of items before leaving. After realizing other merchandise was missing, the store owner used surveillance footage from the store to identify Perkins.

Perkins was indicted by the Williamson County Grand Jury on May 12. She surrendered on June 25 and released on a $5,000 bond. She faces a class D felony, which in Tennessee, is punishable by two to 12 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
