Four teens charged in fatal New Albany arson

New Albany house fire killed three children

NEW ALBANY —  Charges have been issued against three additional people believed to have been involved in the shooting of a flare into a New Albany home in January that caused a fire that killed three children and sent a fourth to an Indianapolis hospital.

Cody Cashion, 18, is claimed to have fired the flare and was charged Feb. 11 with three counts of murder and class A felony arson resulting in bodily injury, but authorities claim more people were involved in the fatal act.

During a press conference Friday, Floyd County Prosecutor Keith Henderson said warrants have been issued for the arrest of those believed to have been in the vehicle with Cashion when a flare was shot into a home at 335 Ealy St., in the early morning hours of Jan. 4.

The flare ignited a blaze that took the lives of Trinity Hughes, 2, Tyrese Hughes, 4, and Tai’zah Hughes, 6. Another child, Taty’ana, 5, was injured in the fire.

Henderson said those who authorities are expected to soon take into custody are Shelby Makowsky, 18, Kilmer Way in Clarksville; Kylie Jenks, 19, McDonald Avenue in New Albany; and a 17-year-old female.

Makowsky and Jenks have been charged with class A felony conspiracy to commit arson.
