Man charged with child molesting in Harrison County

Corydon man arrested in Pennsylvania

CORYDON — A Corydon man has been charged with two counts of child molesting after police say he got a 13-year-old girl drunk and then had sex with her.

Adam Melton, 27, is charged with a class A felony for the intercourse as well as a class C felony for inappropriate touching of the minor. He’s also charged with the class D felony of dissemination of matter harmful to minors for allegedly showing pictures of nude women on his cell phone to the 13-year-old and another minor, 16. He also faces a misdemeanor charge for supplying the alcohol.

Harrison County Sheriff’s Deputies say that on the night of Sept. 7 and into the early morning hours of Sept. 8, Melton supplied alcohol to the girl, 13, and even challenged her to a drinking contest, according to a probable-cause affidavit from the Harrison County Prosecutor’s Office in Corydon. The incident took place at a trailer near Melton’s own trailer along Ind. 337.

After the 13-year-old became sick and vomited from having six alcoholic drinks, Melton reportedly kissed the girl and eventually laid behind her on the couch. He then removed her pants, his pants and had intercourse with the girl.

He told the girl he used a condom during the sex act, but said it broke, leaving the girl “feeling frightened, scared, extremely nervous and confused,” according to the affidavit.

In an initial interview with investigators, Melton said he knew the girl was 13 and admitted to kissing her and placing a hickey on her neck. He also told investigators that he would not be able to deny having sex with the girl because he had been drinking, court records show.

Melton, an over-the-road truck driver, was arrested in Sommerset, Penn., by the Pennsylvania State Police. He is awaiting extradition to Indiana and is being held on a $25,000 cash-only bond, according to a press release from the prosecutor’s office.

“Crimes against children are heinous and simply unacceptable,” said Prosecutor J. Otto Schalk. “As a prosecutor and a parent, I believe we must protect our youth — they are our future and by far the most vulnerable and innocent victims in our community.”

Conviction on a class A felony carries a sentence of 20 to 50 years, with 30 years being the advisory sentence.
