Man accused of illegally killing 300-pound deer

INDIANAPOLIS — A giant buck called “Nightmare” for its size and ability to elude hunters is living up to its nickname even in death.

Department of Natural Resources officials say they were able to catch a man suspected of illegally killing the deer in part because he wasn’t able to lift the 300-pound carcass into his truck.

Conservation Officer Jet Quillen tells The Indianapolis Star that authorities were called to a property near Eagle Creek Park early Tuesday after a resident heard a gunshot.

The resident caught the suspected poacher struggling to load the deer. He fled, but not before the property owner got his license plate.

Authorities say the man admitted shooting the buck and could face charges.

Deer hunters aren’t allowed to use firearms in Indiana until mid-November.
