Second Gibson murder trial scheduled for this summer

Attorneys prepare for second William Clyde Gibson capital case

NEW ALBANY — William Clyde Gibson III appeared in a Floyd County court this morning during a hearing where the dates of the his second and third murder trials were scheduled.

During the hearing in Floyd County Superior Court No. 1, presiding Judge Susan Orth set a trial date of June 2, 2014, for the murder of Stephanie Kirk, a 35-year-old Charlestown woman.

Kirk’s body was discovered buried in Gibson’s backyard nearly a week after the remains of Christine Whitis, 75, were found in his New Albany home on Woodbourne Drive in April 2012.

Gibson was sentenced to lethal injection last month following a conviction for killing Whitis.

Floyd County Prosecutor Keith Henderson has said he will pursue the death penalty in the Kirk trial.

Gibson is also charged in the murder of Karen Hodella, 45, whose body was found in the Ohio River in 2003.

The Hodella trial date was scheduled for October 2014 during today’s hearing. Prosecutors are not expected to seek the death penalty for Hodella’s murder.

Gibson’s defense team entered a motion to continue and separate the final two murder trials, which had been scheduled on the same day in January, said attorney Drew Adams, who is one of Gibson’s attorneys for the Kirk trial.

Adams said Gibson was placed under oath during the hearing and withdrew his previous request for a speedy trial.
