Jeffersonville officer's hand hurt during arrest

Couple charged after drunken argument

JEFFERSONVILLE — A Jeffersonville police officer’s hand was broken on Sunday while arresting a drunken Floyds Knobs man who had been involved in a physical altercation with his girlfriend moments earlier, police reported.

Dustin T. Glotzbach, 29, of Saint Johns Road, and Tiffany Coogle, 27, of East Spring Street in New Albany, were each arrested about 11 p.m. after police responded to a 911 call at the woman’s mother’s home on Longview Beach Road in Jeffersonville.

The caller had reported one of the people involved was armed with a knife and was trying to enter the home.

When police arrived, Glotzbach and Coogle were found outside of the home and appeared to have been in a fight, and each appeared to have suffered injuries.

The officer instructed both to the ground and reported Coogle complied, but Glotzbach was uncooperative.

Glotzbach was “cussing and yelling at me and also was coming at me attempting to assault me,” the officer reported. “[Glotzbach] attempted to punch me without success and was actively resisting.”

After police took the man to the ground, he “continued to resist and continued to get up from the ground,” according to the police report.

Glotzbach was secured in handcuffs after police struck him in the knee, back and neck areas.

With Glotzbach in custody, police spoke with Coogle who said the two had been in a physical altercation over her attempting to prevent him from driving, as they had been on a boat earlier in the day drinking alcohol.

“[Coogle] advised during the altercations, [Glotzbach] pushed her down at least three times causing injury and pain,” according the to police report.

Coogle was found with cuts and scrapes to her face, arm and feet, police reported. Grass stains on her clothing was consistent with being on the ground.

She told police after she attempted to use her cell phone to call 911, Glotzbach grabbed the phone and threw it over a nearby fence.

The woman also reported that during the altercation, Glotzbach pulled out a pocket knife and screamed expletives at her.

Officers did not locate the knife during their investigation.

While speaking with Glotzbach, he said he had been assaulted by Coogle and admitted to pushing her down and throwing her cell phone.

Both Glotzbach and Coogle were found to have slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, police reported.

Glotzbach’s pickup truck was located a short distance from the home in a ditch area.

Coogle’s mother reported to police that at some point during the altercation she saw her daughter with a knife.

After leaving the Michael L. Becher Adult Correctional Complex where Glotzbach and Coogle were booked in, the officer noticed swelling and pain in his right hand.

After having his hand x-rayed at Clark Memorial Hospital, it was determined to be broken.

Glotzbach was preliminarily charged with battery to an officer and resisting law enforcement, both class D felonies; battery and interference with a crime, both class A misdemeanors; and disorderly conduct and public intoxication, both class B misdemeanors.

Coogle was charged with A misdemeanor battery and public intoxication and disorderly conduct, both class B misdemeanors.

According to online court records, Glotzbach was charged in January 2012 with an open alcoholic beverage container during operation of a motor vehicle and passing on the right; both class C infractions were later dismissed in court.
