Clarksville officer interrupts burglary

Man arrested has pending 2012 drug and firearm charges

CLARKSVILLE — A Clarksville Police Department officer walked in on a home burglary Wednesday after a concerned neighbor called authorities.

Dale H. Hartlerode, 27, Depauw, was preliminarily charged in the incident with class B felony burglary and other chargers before being booked into the Michael L. Becher Adult Correctional Complex in Jeffersonville.

Police responded to Wellington Green mobile home community about 9 p.m. May 7. The responding officer was met by the person who had made the call and who further reported a man was seen moments earlier kicking open the door of a home on nearby Pacific Drive. The officer approached the home and found the door open and damage to the lock.

After leaning his head into the home, the officer found a man, later identified as Hartlerode, “coming from a closet with multiple bags of stolen items in his hand,” according to the police report.

Hartlerode was ordered to the ground by gunpoint, and he complied with police for the remainder of his arrest.

Hartlerode was also found with a “very large knife on his right side,” according to the report.

After the arrest, police were told by the caller that Hartlerode had been seen using a knife in an attempt to gain access into the home through a window, then kicking in the front door.

Before leaving the scene, Police waited for the homeowner to return to the location. The homeowner did a walk through of the residence and reported several hats and pairs of shoes missing.

The property Hartlerode was found carrying when police arrived had been taken into custody for processing.

Hartlerode also was preliminarily charged with residential entry, theft and possession of stolen property, all class D felonies, and class B misdemeanor criminal mischief.

The dates of his upcoming court hearings were not provided on online court records as of press time.

Court records do show, however, that Hartlerode was charged in Clark County Circuit Court No. 2 in 2012 with possession of methamphetamine and possession of cocaine or narcotic drug or a school bus, both class B felonies; possession of paraphernalia, and two counts carrying a handgun without a license, all class A misdemeanors; and visiting a common nuisance.

A court employee said a pretrial conference in the 2012 case is scheduled for June 16.
